Youth unemployment crisis continues as nearly one million young Britons still not in work or education, ONS confirms

TL;DR

The number of 16-24 year olds not in education, employment, or training (NEET) fell to 981,000 between April and June, down 30,000 from the previous quarter.
The NEET rate dropped to 13.0% of the age group, a 0.5 percentage point decrease on the quarter.
However, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) noted the underlying trend is upwards, with the total 30,000 higher than the same period last year.
The Government is investing £2.5 billion to tackle youth unemployment, including a Jobs Guarantee scheme expected to create 90,000 fully funded jobs by 2029.
A youth employment charity estimates that each young person who becomes NEET costs the state an average of £244,000 over their lifetime.
