Nepal Flood Rescue Race Intensifies as Scientists Urge Climate Caution

Rescuers are working through devastated Himalayan valleys as hundreds remain missing after a glacial collapse. Officials are focused on evacuations and travel warnings, while researchers say the disaster fits wider warming risks but cannot yet be directly attributed to climate change.

Rescue officials, foreign missions and families are focused on finding survivors and protecting people still in the affected valleys, while scientists are examining how a glacier collapse unleashed the flood—and what it may, and may not, say about climate change.

The disaster struck the Nepal-Tibet border region after ice, rock and debris collapsed into a valley, sending floodwaters through settlements, roads and border infrastructure. The US Geological Survey concluded that the event first identified as an earthquake was instead a “glacial collapse and debris flow” that caused catastrophic impacts downstream; it said no earthquake had occurred.

Authorities’ immediate concern is the human toll. Nepalese reports have put the death toll above 150, while the number of missing people has varied as officials collect records from remote communities, tour operators and both sides of the border. Missing people include local residents, workers and pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash, as well as visitors from Britain, India, the United States, Australia and Canada. Damaged roads, deep sediment and unstable slopes have complicated searches, with helicopters and ground teams struggling to reach some areas.

For the UK and other governments, the response has centred on consular help and safety guidance rather than explaining the cause. The Foreign Office warned that transport and communications infrastructure had been severely damaged and urged travellers to follow Nepalese authorities as conditions change rapidly. Tour operators and relatives, meanwhile, have described an anxious wait for contact with groups whose phones went offline near the border crossing.

Scientists broadly agree that the collapse triggered a cascading flood, but they caution against a simple attribution. Saswata Sanyal of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said the Lhende Khola had flooded twice in 14 months, this time after an ice-rock avalanche blocked the river and released a sudden downstream surge. Researchers note that Himalayan warming, glacier retreat and degrading mountain permafrost raise general risks; they also stress that too few collapses have been documented to make a definitive claim about climate change’s role in this specific event.

For survivors, the distinction is secondary to the scale of loss. Kalpana Malla said her family was swept away “in front of my eyes,” adding that she and her son survived after climbing onto a roof.
