Accounts from across the political spectrum describe the same core picture: a late-night firearms incident in Braintree left three people hurt, while police say it was targeted rather than a threat to the wider public.

The incident brought a major emergency response to Market Place at about 10.10pm on August 31, with officers trying to identify four males who were seen leaving the area.

Both reports say the three injured people were taken to hospital and were not believed to have life-threatening injuries. They also agree that one person was arrested and remained in custody as the investigation continued. The right-wing account emphasised reports of a police helicopter and a substantial police-and-ambulance presence, while the left-wing report noted residents’ accounts of multiple emergency vehicles and an air ambulance landing nearby.¹

The two accounts rely on the same police assessment of what happened. Detective Inspector Richard Trower said officers believed those involved knew one another and that the incident was "not a random incident but instead directed by one specific group of people towards another specific group of people."²

Police said they did not believe there was an ongoing risk to the public, even as a visible presence was expected to remain in the town centre while enquiries continued. Investigators were seeking four men or boys, described as being from their mid-teens to mid-20s, who were seen leaving the scene.¹
