Speculation about Meghan Markle joining The Gentlemen has produced sharply different accounts: some reports describe early discussions and a possible reversal, while the show’s cast and producers have declined to confirm any role and have largely dismissed the claims.

The tension played out at the London premiere for the Netflix crime drama’s second season, where attention on the new episodes was repeatedly diverted by questions about a possible third-season appearance from the Duchess of Sussex.

BBC News reported that any talks were understood to be at an early stage, with no role or details publicly disclosed. Theo James, who leads the series as Eddie Halstead, urged caution: “It’s fascinating to watch, but ultimately it’s a lot of rumour.”¹ Executive producer Matthew Read likewise would not rule the reports in or out, saying it was not right to speculate yet.¹

Other accounts have presented the story more definitively. One report said Markle had been offered a part in the third instalment but that the offer was later withdrawn after a strong public reaction, attributing that claim to royal author Tina Brown.² That account contrasts with the more qualified picture from the premiere, where neither the production nor the cast confirmed an offer.

James took an even firmer line in a separate interview, calling reports that Markle would join the show “mainly a lot of hot air” and saying the immediate priority was attracting viewers for season two before work on a third season.³ Hugh Bonneville framed the chatter as “a genius piece of marketing by whoever just dreamt up that idea,” while also joking about alternative casting.⁴

The common ground is that no confirmed casting announcement has emerged. While reports have kept open the possibility of preliminary conversations, the people closest to the series have offered no evidence that Markle is attached to the show.
