Two people have died and four others have been injured after a house fire in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, turned a close-knit community into the focus of a murder investigation and a possible organised-crime inquiry.

Cleveland Police said officers were called to Birchington Avenue at 5:23am, where six people had been inside the property. One woman remains in critical condition, while three others suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. Two men, aged 23 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of murder. ¹

The central question is whether the blaze was an isolated attack or connected to Saturday’s A66 crash, which killed seven people, including two police officers. Police have not established a link, but Superintendent Emily Harrison said officers were “keeping an open mind” and could not rule out wider organised crime. ¹
