Reports from right- and left-leaning outlets agree that British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos is in ICE custody and faces removal from the United States. They differ mainly in how they describe his political record, with several accounts stressing the contrast between the case and his previous support for tougher immigration enforcement.
Yiannopoulos’s detention has drawn attention not only because of his public profile, but because the immigration allegations mirror policies he has repeatedly backed. Authorities say the case follows years of legal residence that ended with an alleged overstay and a missed hearing.
The Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally through New York in May 2019, but later remained beyond his authorized stay. It said an immigration judge issued a final removal order on July 22 after he did not attend an immigration hearing, and that he would remain detained pending removal. “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” a DHS spokesperson said.1
Accounts grouped on the right largely foreground the official timeline, his detention at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and the prospect of deportation. One report described Yiannopoulos as a conservative influencer and noted that he had previously argued for immediate deportation of people unable to prove lawful status.1
Left-leaning coverage similarly reports the removal order, but places greater weight on the apparent contradiction. The BBC noted that Yiannopoulos had advocated “on the spot deportation for anyone who can't prove they are in the US legally” and had called for legal immunity for ICE agents on duty.2 The Guardian also reported that ICE’s detainee database listed him as being in agency custody, while noting that activist Laura Loomer claimed online to have previously reported him to ICE.3
Yiannopoulos, a former Breitbart editor who has also worked with Ye and interned for Marjorie Taylor Greene, had not publicly responded to the reported detention. His legal representation and the timing of any removal were not clear in the reports.
