Right-wing says a hot-tub fault may have caused Spanish holiday deaths
Reports say investigators are examining whether a suction-system malfunction led to the deaths of Patrick and Thomasina Tobin at a villa near Valencia. Accounts differ on which spouse may have first become trapped, while police continue their inquiry.
Reports from the right-wing press broadly frame the deaths of Patrick and Thomasina Tobin as a suspected equipment failure, while differing over the sequence in which the couple became trapped and tried to help one another.
The central question for investigators is whether the villa hot tub’s suction system created a force neither of the holidaymakers could escape. The couple’s teenage children found them at the family’s rented property in Cullera, near Valencia.
One account says Civil Guard specialists were examining “a technical failure in the Jacuzzi’s suction system” that may have trapped Thomasina Tobin, with Patrick Tobin believed to have died while trying to rescue her. It also reported marks and scratches on both bodies and said investigators had ruled out foul play after finding no forced entry or suspicious CCTV activity.1
A second report characterises the suspected mechanism as suction entrapment: a powerful pull from a drain can hold a person, hair or clothing underwater. It says tests were continuing and that investigators were considering whether one person was caught by the hydro-massage system before the other died in a rescue attempt. That account says electrocution had been ruled out, and quotes the resort operator as urging patience until the official inquiry is complete.2
The accounts differ on the crucial detail of who first became trapped. Another report says police were working on the theory that Patrick Tobin was caught by the suction system and that Thomasina Tobin died attempting to save him. It adds that preliminary findings did not treat the deaths as suspicious and that police said the couple did not drown; acute stress and exhaustion during a struggle were among the possibilities being examined.3
Across the reports, the common ground is that authorities have not alleged criminal involvement and are focusing on a possible accidental malfunction. The conflicting accounts underline that the final sequence remains unresolved pending the investigation.
