Conflicting casualty counts cloud the rescue effort after Nepal-Tibet floods

Rescue teams are searching for hundreds of missing people after floods and mudslides struck the Nepal-Tibet border, but casualty estimates vary sharply as officials work to verify tourist and local records.

A flash flood and mudslide along the Nepal-Tibet border has left communities devastated and hundreds of people unaccounted for, while sharply different casualty estimates complicate the emergency response.

Reports from the two political media groupings broadly agree on the scale of the destruction: homes, bridges, roads and hydropower facilities were swept away, and downstream communities were warned to move away from swollen rivers. A report citing Nepalese authorities initially put the number of missing travellers at 384, including 291 foreign nationals, with 22 bodies recovered. It also said 12 British nationals were feared missing.

A separate report carried a much higher estimate, saying 579 people were missing and 95 bodies had been recovered. It identified 54 Americans and 33 Britons among those unaccounted for, while describing the disaster as following an earthquake. Those figures contrast with accounts from other outlets, which reported at least 95 deaths in Nepal and hundreds missing, while emphasizing that the numbers remained provisional and were being checked against tourism-company records.

The reported British total also shifted. Early accounts identified 12 missing Britons, including a 13-year-old girl, while a later tourism-board update raised the figure to 33. On the Tibetan side, Chinese state media reported three deaths and 265 missing after a mudslide at Gyirong, but said the tally was preliminary.

Authorities have linked the flooding variously to an earthquake-triggered avalanche, an ice-and-rock collapse or a breached glacial dam. A blockage upstream has raised fears of another surge. Nepal, China, India and other countries are coordinating searches, although debris, damaged roads, weak communications and difficult weather have slowed helicopter and ground operations.

The immediate priority is to verify who is missing, locate survivors and warn communities downstream. Until those checks are complete, the competing totals underline how incomplete the picture remains.
