Disney+ Bets Maura Higgins Can Give Blind Date a New Lease of Life

Disney+ is reviving Blind Date with Maura Higgins as host, pairing the familiar matchmaking premise with new format twists. The reboot has drawn attention to whether her reality-TV background can match Cilla Black’s enduring legacy.

Disney+ is bringing back Blind Date, but its biggest gamble may be whether Maura Higgins can make the famously Cilla Black-associated format feel new without losing its identity.

The revival will retain the central conceit: contestants choose among three potential partners hidden behind the iconic wall before meeting their selection face-to-face. Disney+, however, is also promising “unique, innovative and head-turning format twists,” with contestants spending the summer together while other potential matches remain behind the wall.

Coverage from one perspective has framed the announcement as a nostalgic return for fans of the original ITV hit, describing Higgins as the person stepping into Black’s shoes. The show originally ran from 1985 to 2003 and became a Saturday-night staple, later returning briefly with Paul O’Grady as host. Its legacy includes millions of viewers and three marriages involving contestants, with Black attending each wedding, according to the report.

A more sceptical reaction has focused on the scale of the change. One report says fans are divided over the reboot, including the choice of a replacement host and the planned format alterations. That concern contrasts with Disney’s view that Higgins’ experience as a dating-show contestant and her “straight-talking humour” make her suited to attracting new audiences.

Disney+ executives have also argued that reviving a recognisable brand helps the service stand out in an increasingly crowded dating-show market. Angela Jain described Higgins’ public persona as “cheeky, fun, witty, and warm,” while the streamer has yet to announce a release date.

The reboot therefore rests on two competing promises: preserve the wall, the matchmaking and the nostalgia, while making Blind Date “bigger, better and bolder” for a new streaming audience.
