The reports differ mainly in emphasis, with some focusing on the abrupt change from earlier reassurances and others on the illness and the institutional response.

Norway’s royal household has said the 89-year-old king is in an “extremely serious” condition at Oslo’s National Hospital, escalating concern after more than a week of treatment for haemolytic anaemia and a subsequent infection.

Reports from both right- and left-leaning outlets say Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, who has been acting as regent during his father’s absence, cancelled their public programmes and travelled to the hospital alongside other relatives. The palace’s brief update — “The King’s health condition is extremely serious” — offered no further detail on his prognosis.¹

The sharper tone contrasts with the court’s position only days earlier, when it said Harald was stable and had “responded to treatment” for a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.² Right-leaning coverage has highlighted that reversal, as well as the king’s longstanding refusal to abdicate despite recurring health problems. Harald has previously said his oath to parliament was “for life.”³

Left-leaning reports place greater weight on the medical context: haemolytic anaemia reduces red blood cells and can cause fatigue and shortness of breath. They also note that the king had already reduced his public workload because of age and previous health episodes, including the fitting of a pacemaker in 2024.⁴

Both accounts point to a wider national response. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a trip and said Norway was sending “warm thoughts to the king and the rest of the royal family,” while public concern has grown outside the palace and hospital.⁵
