Peter Cullen’s death has prompted tributes centred on the enduring reach of his voice work: one account foregrounds the Transformers role that made him internationally famous, while another places it alongside his long list of animated and film performances.

The Canadian actor, best known as the commanding voice of Optimus Prime, died on Tuesday aged 85. His career connected generations of viewers, from 1980s television animation to blockbuster films released decades later.

Both accounts say Cullen died peacefully surrounded by family, and cite the family’s request that admirers honour him through “compassion, integrity, and loyalty” while remembering to “be strong enough to be gentle.”¹ That phrase also reflected the approach Cullen said shaped Optimus Prime.

The first account focuses on the scale of his Transformers legacy. Cullen originated the Autobot leader in the 1984 animated series, returned for Michael Bay’s film franchise and last voiced the character in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It also notes his 2010 induction into the Transformers Hall of Fame and recalls that he regarded the part as his favourite.¹

The second account offers a broader portrait, tracing Cullen’s move from Canadian television and radio and appearances including The Sonny & Cher Show into specialist voice work. It highlights his role as Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, as well as KARR in Knight Rider, vocal effects for Predator and King Kong, and an Emmy nomination in 2011.²

The reports converge on the personal source of Cullen’s most famous performance. He said Optimus Prime’s voice drew on his older brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran, who advised him: “He’s strong enough to be gentle.”² For fans, that restrained authority became the defining sound of the character; for Cullen’s family, it was also the principle they asked his audience to carry forward.
