Blood Moon’s Best UK Views May Be Lost to Cloud

A deep partial lunar eclipse is due before dawn, with southern and eastern England offering the strongest early viewing prospects. But growing cloud and the Moon’s low position could prevent many people from seeing its peak.

The forecasts agree on the astronomical spectacle but strike a cautious note for observers: much of the UK may be clouded out, while the south and east have the best chance of seeing the eclipse before conditions worsen.

A deep partial lunar eclipse is expected to turn the Moon reddish or copper before dawn on Friday, but the window for a clear view may be narrower than the event itself. Cloud cover and the approaching moonset are likely to matter as much as the eclipse timetable.

Reports from across the political media spectrum describe the same basic sequence. The Moon enters Earth’s lighter penumbral shadow at 2.23am BST; the more visible partial phase starts at 3.33am, and maximum eclipse arrives at 5.12am, with about 93% of the lunar disk inside the darker umbra. The reddish appearance occurs because sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere is bent toward the Moon, while shorter blue wavelengths are scattered away.

Both accounts place the weather at the centre of the viewing prospects. The Met Office says “the greatest chance of seeing something is likely to be across southern and eastern England during its earlier stages, before cloud becomes more extensive.” Elsewhere, brief breaks could still offer a glimpse, but the forecast points to increasingly widespread cloud as the night advances.

The shared advice is practical rather than dramatic: seek an elevated site with an unobstructed west-southwest horizon and watch early. The Moon will be low and begins setting at roughly 6.15am in London, before the partial eclipse formally ends at 6.51am.

Unlike the recent solar eclipse, this event requires no protective eyewear. It can be watched safely with the naked eye—if the weather cooperates.
