Liverpool’s move for Lucca Brughmans is being presented both as a significant deadline-day signing and as a long-term investment: the 18-year-old will not join the club’s first-team group for another two seasons.

Liverpool have completed a deal to sign the Genk goalkeeper for a fee that could reach £30 million, securing a player already featuring regularly in Belgium while postponing his Anfield arrival until the 2027-28 campaign.

The deal includes an initial payment and further add-ons, with the £30m figure representing the maximum possible value rather than a guaranteed fee. Brughmans has signed a six-year contract and will remain with Genk on loan this season.¹

At 6ft 7in, Brughmans has started each of Genk’s first four matches this season and has played for Belgium at youth level. Liverpool’s interest is understood to have emerged from work by the club’s global talent department, which has recently recruited several young players from overseas markets.¹

The longer timetable distinguishes the transfer from an immediate solution in goal. Liverpool already have Alisson, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Vitezslav Jaros among their options, though Alisson’s contract is due to expire next summer and Mamardashvili’s future is uncertain. Brughmans is therefore viewed as a potential option from 2027 rather than a replacement this season.¹

While one account focused on the structure and strategic rationale of the signing, another placed Liverpool’s confirmation within a busy transfer-deadline-day market, alongside Manchester City’s reported agreement for Enzo Fernandez. It similarly described Brughmans’ move as a deal “worth up to £30m,” underscoring that Liverpool have made a substantial commitment despite the delayed arrival.²
