Police search for former Premier League star leaves family and clubs seeking answers
Hungarian police are searching for former Premier League midfielder Akos Buzsaky, who has not been seen since August 18. His father says he was unaware of the search, while former clubs have urged supporters to hope for his safe return.
Hungarian police are searching for former Premier League footballer Akos Buzsaky, who has not been seen since August 18. The case has prompted concern from his former clubs, while relatives say they had limited contact with him.
Reports from several outlets say the 44-year-old former QPR midfielder was last known to be in Budapest, although authorities have released few details about why the search was launched.1 A separate report also described him as missing for about a week, reflecting the same central uncertainty over his whereabouts.2
Buzsaky’s father, Akos Buzsaky Sr, told Hungarian outlet Blikk that he did not know police were looking for his son. He said Buzsaky spends substantial periods in Greece, where he works as a construction contractor, and that the two men speak less often because they do not live together.3 His father added: “The last time I spoke to him was last week, when he was at home.”3
The accounts differ mainly in emphasis. Some focus on the police appeal and Buzsaky’s football career, including his time at QPR, Plymouth and Portsmouth; another highlights the family’s distance and his work abroad. A further report similarly identifies him as the subject of an active police search but provides no additional explanation for his disappearance.4
QPR said it was “concerned to learn that R’s favourite Akos Buzsaky has been reported missing” and said it was “praying he’s found safe and well.” Plymouth Argyle issued a comparable statement, saying: “Everybody at Plymouth Argyle is hoping that Ákos is found safe soon.”2
Buzsaky won 20 caps for Hungary and made 18 Premier League appearances. He retired from professional football after a career that also included a spell at Ferencvaros. Police have not publicly disclosed further information about his movements or the circumstances of the search.
