The central draw was the return of Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters, nearly three decades after the first film. Their appearance in Leicester Square also brought back returning cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, while younger actors including Joey King and Maisie Williams underscored the sequel’s generational shift.

Red-carpet accounts focused on the contrast between the leads’ looks: Kidman wore a silver Chanel gown, while Bullock chose a strapless leopard-print Givenchy dress.¹ That fashion-forward attention sat alongside more plot-driven coverage, which stressed that the film revisits the Owens family’s magic and its long-running curse rather than merely recreating the 1998 original.

Bullock said the reunion with Kidman felt unusually easy after years apart: “Somehow we seamlessly stepped right back into these two sisters’ shoes like no time had passed at all.”² Kidman, meanwhile, cast the sequel as evidence that a female-led project with substantial backing could still reach the screen, calling the opportunity to make it together “kind of fantastic.”²

The new cast has described a different pressure: preserving what made the original a cult favourite while adding to it. King said joining the production came with “massive responsibility” and a desire “to do it justice.”²

The film, adapted from Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic, sends the Owens women from Massachusetts to the United Kingdom to confront the source of their magic and protect the family’s next generation.³ Practical Magic 2 is scheduled for cinema release on September 11.
