Burscough train collision leaves passengers waiting as rail route shuts

A Northern train reportedly struck a vehicle near Martin Lane in Burscough, prompting an emergency response and the closure of lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport. Passengers reported being shaken but said those on board were safe.

Accounts from the scene agree that a serious rail incident brought an abrupt halt to services in West Lancashire, while differing mainly in emphasis: one focused on the emergency response and passenger accounts, the other on the scale of travel disruption and alternatives.

A Northern train reportedly collided with a vehicle near Martin Lane in Burscough, leaving passengers awaiting evacuation as ambulances and fire crews attended. With no official confirmation of injuries or casualties, the immediate concern was both the safety of those on board and the closure of a key local route.

The reports describe a train stopped near the Martin Lane and Whitehouse Lane area, alongside what appeared to be a damaged vehicle. Both accounts said emergency services were on site and all lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport had been blocked.

The right-wing source highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the collision and the personal impact inside the train. One passenger, travelling with children, said: “I am still on the train with my kids, we are all shook.” Another passenger said: “Everyone on the train is okay we are all just stuck waiting to be evacuated.” The report also said an image appeared to show debris in a carriage and a door off its hinges.

The left-wing source similarly reported that passengers remained on board awaiting evacuation, but placed greater weight on Northern’s operational response. The operator said: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident Wigan Wallgate - Southport all lines are blocked.” It said Advance and Peak ticket restrictions had been lifted in affected areas.

Both reports said disruption was expected through the end of the day, with services cancelled or revised. Northern advised passengers to use the Bee Network’s 635 bus between Wigan and Appley Bridge, or specified Merseyrail routes, at no extra cost.
