Max Dowman turned Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win at Ipswich Town into a statement performance, scoring twice as a heavily changed side reached the fourth round. Yet the result also sharpened a familiar question around the teenager: how quickly should Arsenal increase his role?

The more cautious view centres on protecting a player still at the beginning of his senior career. Arteta called Dowman “unbelievable” and praised his ability to perform under the demands placed on young players, but insisted: “He is 16 years old and we have to be really cautious.”¹ The Arsenal manager said the club did not want to hold him back, but needed to ensure each opportunity came with the “right context” and preparation.

That approach is supported by the scale of Dowman’s early milestones. He made 13 appearances last season and had spent much of the current campaign among the substitutes before completing 90 minutes at Portman Road. Former player Jamie Redknapp similarly argued that Arsenal’s handling had been “perfect,” while warning against giving him either too little or too much football.¹

Other accounts saw the Ipswich match as evidence that Dowman should feature more often, particularly in cup competition. Arsenal made nine changes but still won comfortably, with Dowman’s brace complemented by goals from Noni Madueke and Mikel Merino. One assessment described him as the standout in a £375m side and said the Carabao Cup offered “the perfect opportunity” for him to build minutes.²

Both perspectives agree on the player’s ability. The difference is emphasis: one treats his performance as a reason to protect a rare prospect; the other sees it as an argument for Arteta to rotate more boldly. Arsenal’s cup run may allow the club to pursue both aims at once.
