Carabao Cup’s unusual split draw puts European clubs’ schedules under the microscope

The third-round draw is being staged in two parts to accommodate clubs competing in Europe, creating an unusual mix of pre-set home venues and later opponent selections.

The Carabao Cup’s third-round draw is taking an unusual two-stage route this season, with European commitments forcing organisers to separate venue decisions from the main pairing process.

The pre-draw established home-and-away status for clubs involved in continental competition before the evening’s second-round fixtures had concluded. Manchester United, Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Sunderland were assigned home status, while Arsenal and Aston Villa were set to play away.

That arrangement reflects the scheduling pressure created by Champions League, Europa League and potentially Conference League matches during the same period. It also means that several major clubs knew where they would play before learning their opponents, an approach presented in live coverage as both practical and unusual.

The main draw was scheduled to follow the Preston North End–Everton tie, alongside other second-round matches including Newcastle United–West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham Hotspur–Charlton Athletic and Bradford City–Burnley. Chelsea’s place was likewise dependent on its later meeting with Luton Town. The competition’s field already included 17 confirmed teams, with Nottingham Forest absent after elimination by Leeds United; League Two’s Fleetwood Town remained the lowest-ranked club still involved.

The contrasting coverage focused on different aspects of the same event. One account emphasised the logistical complications, including the possibility of Manchester United and Manchester City playing on separate nights because of policing requirements around the Manchester derby. The other placed the draw within the wider rhythm of a crowded football calendar, while also highlighting the appeal of lower-ranked clubs being drawn against Premier League opposition.

The format preserves the prospect of familiar cup surprises, but it also shows how increasingly dependent domestic competitions are on the demands of European football and broadcast scheduling.
