The inquest has put the fatal collision at the centre of a wider investigation: the officers’ deaths are being examined alongside those of the five people in the Passat, while police have said they are keeping an open mind about possible links to other incidents.

Two Cleveland Police officers died when their marked vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat travelling against traffic on the A66 near Middlesbrough. The collision killed everyone in both vehicles, and the coroner has adjourned the officers’ inquests pending further proceedings.

At Teesside Coroner’s Court, Paul Appleton said PC Matthew Blades, 37, suffered head and neck injuries, while PC Tom Clough, 38, suffered neck injuries. He told the hearings that “all occupants of both vehicles were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”¹

Accounts across the reports agree on the central sequence: there had been a police pursuit of the Passat, but it was halted after the vehicle entered the A66 against the flow of traffic. The coroner said the Passat then collided shortly afterwards with a police vehicle that “had not been directly involved in the prior pursuit.”² The five people in the Passat were Cole Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and Michael Robert Cahill and Jacob Matusiak, both 23.

Some coverage has focused on the personal and public response to the officers’ deaths, including fundraising and a local vigil, while other reporting has concentrated on the inquest evidence and the investigation’s wider context. Cleveland Police have made arrests following the crash and are also investigating a vehicle incident and a fatal house fire nearby. The force said it “cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time.”³
