Norway’s mourning for King Harald V has united public figures and ordinary citizens around his legacy, while coverage across the political spectrum also points to the personal and institutional pressures awaiting King Haakon VIII.

Harald’s death at 89 closes a 35-year reign marked by public affection and a gradual opening of the monarchy. His son’s automatic accession, however, comes as the family confronts questions that extend well beyond the succession ceremony.

Accounts from both sides emphasise the scale of the immediate tribute. Mourners gathered outside Oslo’s Royal Palace with flowers, and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said Norway was “united in grief and gratitude.”¹ King Charles III also praised Harald’s “unwavering dedication,” describing the late monarch as a relative and friend whose public service strengthened ties between Britain and Norway.²

More reflective coverage portrays Harald as an approachable moderniser whose response to the 2011 attacks helped make him a symbol of national solidarity. It also notes that parliament recently backed retaining the monarchy, even as debate over the institution has continued.³ Haakon, 53, has adopted the royal motto, “All for Norway,” and is expected to assume a more visible constitutional role after years acting as regent during his father’s ill health.¹

The contrast lies in what comes next. Several reports foreground the scrutiny surrounding Queen Mette-Marit’s past contact with Jeffrey Epstein and legal proceedings involving her son from a previous relationship. Mette-Marit has apologised for the contact, while Harald had said she had not broken the law.⁴ Other reporting places those difficulties alongside Haakon’s standing as a prepared, hard-working successor, arguing that the new king must balance private family pressures with preserving confidence in the monarchy.¹
