Survivors and families describe a sudden, chaotic disaster in which passengers struggled to escape, while northern Cyprus authorities say the cause — and any possible failures — will be fully examined.

The ferry had barely left Kyrenia for Turkey when it began taking on water and overturned, leaving eight people dead and passengers unaccounted for. The immediate rescue has given way to two parallel ordeals: a search at sea and an investigation into how a scheduled passenger crossing became a major maritime disaster.

Officials said the vessel, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, had been delayed by poor weather and was struck by two waves after departure. The ferry has since sunk in water about 514 metres deep, and investigators are seeking its black-box recorder. The captain, seven crew members and another man were arrested, while warrants were issued for seven more people.¹

For the government, the focus is on establishing responsibility. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said, “Every aspect of this incident will be investigated,” adding that even minor negligence would be uncovered and those responsible would not be spared.² Turkish coast guard and military teams have joined the rescue effort.

Survivors, however, describe danger escalating before the evacuation. Serkan Kunduraci said crew initially attributed the water ingress to “just a loose gasket causing a leak.” As the ferry listed, he said, passengers panicked and some were trapped toward the rear of the vessel.² Deniz Ozpolat likewise recalled a crush at the exit and said passengers could not find life jackets before doors were later opened.²

Families waiting in Kyrenia face the most personal consequences. Ayten Bicer said she lost her grip on her daughter after a suitcase fell during the chaos: “She was saying, ‘Don’t let go’. And I didn’t let go of my daughter. I swear, I didn’t let her go.”³ Her account, alongside survivor testimony, underscores why the official inquiry will be closely watched as the search continues.
