Sunderland’s interest in Jack Grealish is emerging as one of the more unexpected possibilities of the transfer window, but reports differ sharply over whether the move is already advancing or remains only a preliminary idea.

One account says Sunderland have submitted a “shock offer” for the Manchester City winger, whose contract expires at the end of the season. It describes the proposed arrangement as one in which City would continue covering part of Grealish’s wages, while Sunderland would explore retaining him beyond the loan period.¹ Grealish, 30, spent much of last season on loan at Everton and was limited by a foot injury. His reduced role at City has left his future uncertain.

A separate report presents a more cautious picture. It says formal negotiations with City have not yet begun and characterises Grealish as one of several “players of interest” on manager Régis Le Bris’s shortlist.² That version also says any agreement would require detailed discussions over Grealish’s reported £300,000 weekly wages and could include an option to buy because of his impending free-agent status.

Both reports agree that Sunderland are also targeting Igor Paixão of Marseille. The Brazilian winger is reportedly receptive to a move, while negotiations between the clubs continue over a fee. Paixão scored 12 goals and supplied eight assists in 43 appearances last season, making him a more conventional fit for Le Bris’s recruitment model than the experienced Grealish.

The potential deal would nevertheless offer Sunderland significant profile and Premier League experience, as well as the attraction of Europa League football. Grealish is understood to be open to moving to Wearside, although Everton are also expected to consider another loan approach. For now, Paixão appears the more active negotiation, while Grealish remains a high-profile but complicated possibility.
