Everton are moving to bring Jack Grealish back on a season-long loan from Manchester City, betting that a familiar setting can revive the winger’s momentum after injury interrupted his first spell.

The deal is expected to be completed before Tuesday’s 23:00 BST transfer deadline, subject to a medical. Grealish had interest from other clubs, including former side Aston Villa, but preferred an Everton return, according to one report; it says chief executive Angus Kinnear had stayed in contact with the player.¹

Both accounts portray Everton’s pursuit as part of a wider effort to replenish their attack as Iliman Ndiaye nears a reported £65m move to City. Everton are also working on deals for Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Folarin Balogun, while a proposed return for Richarlison is said to have stalled over personal terms.¹

The reports broadly agree that Grealish impressed during his previous loan before a foot injury ended his campaign in January. They differ slightly on the numbers: one lists two goals and six assists in 20 appearances, while the other puts his total at 22 outings. The latter also describes Everton as the only club prepared to meet City’s terms after “several” teams made enquiries.²

Grealish’s own past comments underline why the move appeals to both player and club. Calling Everton an “unbelievable club,” he said the support from staff, teammates and fans “has meant the world to me,” adding that he “absolutely love[s] representing this club.”²

The 30-year-old has made two substitute appearances for City this season but did not feature in Friday’s win at Crystal Palace. For Everton, the proposed reunion offers a known attacking option; for Grealish, it offers a chance to re-establish regular football after his injury-hit year.
