Busy Philipps’ brain-tumor diagnosis reveals two very different recovery hurdles
The actress says a preventative scan detected a rare brain tumor despite her having no symptoms. Surgery was followed by an infection that required another procedure, but she has since returned to work.
Busy Philipps has revealed that a preventative scan led to the discovery of a rare brain tumor, setting off a medical ordeal that included two surgeries and a difficult recovery.
The 47-year-old actress, known for Dawson’s Creek, said she learned in February that she had a grade 2 oligodendroglioma. According to one account, Philipps had been told there was no clear need for a scan because she was healthy and showing no symptoms. After seeking another medical opinion, she decided to proceed with the imaging. 1
The accounts emphasize different aspects of what followed. One focuses on Philipps’ shock at the diagnosis, her decision to continue working and her unexpectedly rapid recovery after the initial operation. She underwent surgery in early March, only weeks before filming a new CBS series, and later described herself as grateful to be alive. 1
A second report provides more detail about the treatment. It says surgeons removed a 2.6-centimeter mass during a five-hour operation on March 2 and classified the tumor as malignant because of its potential to regrow, while also noting that it carries the most favorable outlook among malignant gliomas. 2
The main contrast lies in the aftermath. Philipps initially recovered smoothly, but an incision infection caused by staphylococcus was later detected and required debridement surgery, along with removal of a small titanium tack. The setback left her feeling that her recovery had returned to its starting point, even though the infection was caught before it became deep. 2
Both reports present the scan as pivotal: Philipps had no obvious symptoms, yet the imaging prompted further testing and treatment. She has since used the experience to encourage people—particularly women—to seek information when their health concerns are dismissed.
