Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reunited in London for the premiere of Practical Magic 2, turning the sequel’s launch into a showcase for both the original film’s enduring appeal and its new generation of characters.¹

The Leicester Square event brought Bullock and Kidman back to their roles as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, more than two decades after the 1998 film. The premiere coverage described the pair as the leading figures of the evening, while also spotlighting Joey King and Maisie Williams, who are part of the sequel’s younger cast.² King’s appearance was separately highlighted in coverage of the event.³

The sequel is set 25 years after the original and draws on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 book The Book of Magic. Its story again follows the Owens women, who leave their Massachusetts home for the United Kingdom as they confront a threat to their family’s future. Bullock and Kidman are also executive producers, with Susanne Bier directing and Akiva Goldsman returning as a writer alongside Kelly Marcel and Georgia Pritchett.

The contrasting elements of the premiere were clear: Bullock and Kidman represented continuity, reprising characters from a film that became a cult classic despite earning less worldwide than its reported production budget. King and Williams, meanwhile, signaled the franchise’s attempt to extend the Owens family story to a new generation.

The reunion has also been accompanied by nostalgic promotion. Earlier this month, the two stars appeared unexpectedly at a Los Angeles screening of the original film. “Practical Magic is the perfect movie to show at a cemetery,” Bullock told the audience, according to the report cited in the coverage.² Practical Magic 2 is scheduled for release on September 11.
