Scientific accounts converge on a glacial collapse and debris flow as the trigger, rather than the earthquake first suspected. The US Geological Survey concluded that “no earthquake had occurred,” after analysing seismic data and satellite imagery.4 Researchers say ice, rock, water and sediment then combined into a destructive downstream surge.
The climate interpretation is more qualified. Scientists note that Himalayan warming, glacier retreat and degrading permafrost increase broader hazards, but say the evidence is not yet sufficient to assign this specific collapse directly to climate change. As glaciologist Andrew Mackintosh put it, there have been too few documented collapses to make “very clear statements” about that precise relationship.5
