A late-night shooting on a normally quiet County Durham street has left a 46-year-old man in hospital and prompted an attempted-murder investigation. Police are examining reports that shots were fired from a vehicle before it left the area.

The account carried by the left-wing source centres on the official response. It says emergency services were called to Balmer Hill shortly after 8.10pm on Saturday, August 29, after reports that suspects drove to a property, fired at it and fled. The injured man sustained “birdshot injuries” to his abdomen and was described as being in a critical but stable condition.¹

Right-wing coverage reports the same sequence and arrests, but puts greater weight on the impact on the street. One report described police and forensic officers at the scene, a shattered front window and a road closure; an unnamed resident said police vehicles and flashing lights made the area feel like “chaos.”² That report listed the victim as 42, in contrast with the age of 46 given in the other accounts.

Both perspectives say a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Durham Constabulary said the boy was also arrested on suspicion of theft, failing to stop and driving without a licence, and that both suspects remained in custody.³
