Three people were injured in a firearms incident in Braintree town centre late on Monday, prompting a major police response and an arrest. Detectives say there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the wider public.

Essex Police were called to Market Place at about 10.10pm on 31 August. The three injured people were taken to hospital, with none believed to have life-threatening injuries. One person was arrested and remained in custody.¹

The accounts converge on the police assessment that the incident involved people known to one another. Detective Inspector Richard Trower said officers believed it was “not a random incident” but was “directed by one specific group of people towards another specific group of people.”² He added that police did not believe it posed “an ongoing threat to the public.”²

Police are seeking to identify four males, described as being in their mid-teens to mid-20s, who were seen leaving the area. Investigators have asked anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam footage or other material to contact Essex Police, quoting incident 1345 of 31 August.³
