El Niño’s Growing Strength Puts Global Preparedness to the Test

UN forecasters and scientists say a strengthening El Niño could amplify floods, droughts and heat through early 2027. While the threat is global, officials and researchers stress that early warnings and local preparation can still limit the damage.

The accounts agree that El Niño is intensifying and could disrupt weather worldwide; they differ mainly in emphasis, with one focusing on worldwide preparedness and vulnerable communities, and the other detailing the climate mechanism and possible effects on Britain.

A warming Pacific is raising the prospect of an unusually powerful El Niño at a time when global temperatures are already elevated. Forecasters say the challenge is no longer simply predicting the event, but reducing the damage from its uneven effects.

The World Meteorological Organization says El Niño is firmly established and may become exceptionally strong, bringing shifts in rainfall, floods, drought and extreme heat across multiple regions. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the phenomenon was being “supersized before our eyes,” arguing that rising risks must be met with stronger climate action and protection for people.

Both reports point to sharp Pacific warming: sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are more than 2C above average in some areas, while temperatures below the surface have exceeded normal levels by as much as 8C. The forecasts cited suggest the event could persist until at least February 2027 and potentially rank among the strongest since 1950.

The preparedness-focused account highlights divergent regional consequences: dry conditions and wildfire risks in parts of Southeast Asia, Central America and northern South America, alongside a greater flood risk in eastern Africa, southern Brazil and the southern United States. It describes expanded early-warning systems, medical planning and marine monitoring, while warning that weak housing, sanitation and health systems can deepen the toll in exposed areas.

The other account similarly stresses global disruption but gives particular attention to Britain, where meteorologists say El Niño increases the likelihood of storms in late autumn and early winter. It also cites research suggesting that major El Niño events have strengthened alongside rising global temperatures, though the precise link between climate change and the intensity of individual events remains unsettled.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said El Niño could deliver “a massive blow to communities and economies across the world,” with disruption from droughts and floods already visible. Miguel Aréstegui of Practical Action offered a complementary warning: concern, he said, should “translate into preparedness rather than alarm.”
